Scotland and British Lions legend Doddie Weir has been confirmed as the host for this year’s Swing Low Sweet Charity gala dinner at The Old Swan on the evening of July 9.
Second-row giant Weir won 61 caps for Scotland and also formed part of the now fabled Lions tour to South Africa in 1997. He retired from playing in 2004, and his long-held reputation as a jocular gentleman of the game has since resulted in there being a great demand for his services as an after-dinner speaker and celebrity host.
Swing Low Sweet Charity organiser Ralph Zoing said: “It’s a great coup for Swing Low and its charities to be able to announce Doddie as the host for the evening event.
Doddie was an outstanding player and a larger than life character in more ways than one, and our guests can be sure of a great night with him at the helm.”
Swing Low is also able to confirm a number of new stars for the tag rugby tournament at Ripon Rugby Club which takes place during the day on July 9 and gala dinner.
Joining former internationals such as Simon Easterby, Leon Lloyd and Martyn Wood are: former Australia fly-half Lachlan Mackay; ex-England full-back Jon Callard; Sale second-row Kearnan Myall (recently signed from Leeds Carnegie); and ex-Leicester full-back John Liley.
Space for teams in the tournament and places at the gala dinner are still available but will be booked up very soon – guests and participants can either book their places using the booking forms on www.sweetcharityonline.org.uk or by calling Ralph Zoing, 01423 501 401.
